A pilgrimage across five provinces, not a day trip — filed under Chiang Mai but running south through Nan, Phrae and Sukhothai.
This is one of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports' own suggested routes for Chiang Mai. The places are theirs; the order and the distances are ours, because the Ministry files a route as a set of places rather than a sequence and driving it in the order given would take you back and forth across the province. We put the stops in the order you would actually drive them and measured the result.
The Ministry's record also lists Wat Prathat Cho Hae, Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan, Phetbura Buddhist Park, Si Thep Historical Park. They are too far from the rest to fit the same day, so they have been left off this route.

Ban Bor Suak Community
A village outside Nan that takes visitors in, known for pottery and for organic farming. It has been held up as an example of the sufficiency-economy approach, and the day is spent with people doing what they do anyway.

Wat Sri Panton (Sri Panton Temple)
A Nan temple with a golden naga staircase and a gilded wihan — Lanna architecture as it developed away from Chiang Mai, in a town that kept its own manner of building.

Wat Phumin (Phumin Temple)
The best-known temple in Nan, built in 1596 by the ruler Chetabut Phrommin. The building is cruciform and stands on the backs of two nagas, and the murals inside include the whispering couple that has become the emblem of the province.
