The Mae Rim valley
Named for the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden
A waterfall, a royal temple in teak, and the valley road north of the city. Close enough to do on a scooter.
This is one of the Ministry of Tourism & Sports' own suggested routes for Chiang Mai. The places are theirs; the order and the distances are ours, because the Ministry files a route as a set of places rather than a sequence and driving it in the order given would take you back and forth across the province. We put the stops in the order you would actually drive them and measured the result.

Wat Pa Dara Phirom
A royal temple of about a century old in Mae Rim, with stone lions at the steps and a gilded chedi behind.

Mae Sa Waterfall
Eight tiers in Mae Rim, running all year, with a pool at one of the lower levels that people swim in. Close to the city and busy at weekends.

Mae Sa Elephant Camp
The largest elephant camp in the north, in the Mae Sa valley. Elephants are bathed in the river through the day and there are feeding and walking sessions; riding is still offered here, which some visitors will want to know before they arrive.
