Wat Chiang Man
The oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built where King Mangrai camped while the city was laid out. Its Chang Lom chedi is ringed with elephants in the manner of King Ramkhamhaeng's at Sukhothai, and it holds two revered images, Phra Kaeo Khao and Phra Sila.

Wat Phra Singh
Holds Phra Buddha Sihing, the most revered image in the city, carried out for Songkran each year. The Lai Kham wihan behind the main hall is small, dark and gilded, and is the reason to come.

Wat Suan Dok
The flower garden temple, also called Wat Buppharam: built more than 600 years ago in what had been a royal garden, to house a relic of the Buddha. The white chedis in the western yard hold the ashes of Chiang Mai's ruling family.

Wat Jet Yot
Seven spires on a single stupa, copied from the temple at Bodh Gaya where the Buddha reached enlightenment. It is the temple people born in the year of the snake come to.

Khruba Sri Wichai Monument
The monk who got the road up Doi Suthep built. In 1934 he organised volunteers from across the north to cut it by hand in five months; the monument stands at the bottom of that road, and people stop to pay respects before driving up.

Huay Kaew Waterfall
A small fall of about ten metres inside Doi Suthep–Pui National Park, running all year. It is close enough to the city to reach on foot from the zoo.
