Wat Ban Den, Mae Ngat Reservoir and Bua Thong Falls

Somewhere to go today. These stops are near each other, so the day is mostly spent at them rather than between them. We have not written this one up — the distances are measured and the descriptions come from Wikipedia, and it is offered as a suggestion rather than a guide we have driven.

The day

In order, with the drive between each.

  1. 1

    Bua Thong Falls

    ★ 4.7 (723)

Limestone, about 100 metres over two main tiers at roughly fifty degrees. The rock is porous and grips underfoot rather than turning slippery, which is why people climb it — the reason it is known as the sticky waterfall.

  2. 2

    Wat Ban Den

    ★ 4.7 (7,712)

A hilltop temple in Mae Taeng rebuilt on a grand scale since the 1990s by its abbot, with a row of chedis in the twelve animal-year styles, a long ordination hall and grounds that go on and on. New, bright, enormous and entirely sincere; go in the morning before the buses.

    Mae Ngat Reservoir

    ★ 4.4 (1,635)

Sri Lanna National Park, on 12,500 rai of water held back by the Mae Ngad Somboonchol dam and ringed by hills. In cold season the mist sits on the water at first light. Longtail boats, kayaks and raft houses.
